When shopping for jeans, what are the key factors shoppers should consider?

Fit is really the most important factor when buying denim. One of the most common mistakes when shopping for jeans is buying them too big which makes them unflattering and uncomfortable to wear. In store always try the next size down to ensure you find the perfect fit. When buying online the True Fit tool is a great way to eliminate the guesswork and helps you buy the right size first time around.

It’s also important to decide how much wear you want to get from your jeans. It’s worth paying more if you want an investment pair but try a more affordable brand if you’re just looking for a seasonal trend item.

What is your favourite style of jean?

I’m a total boyfriend convert. After years of pouring myself into super skinnies I love the relaxed easy look. This season I treated myself to a pair of Paige Jimmy Jimmy as they’re a skinny boyfriend so easy to dress up with heels as well. My go-to pair is the Levi’s 501 in vintage indigo, they get better with age and have become a wardrobe staple for me.

The skinny jean – only for the super slender or a great all rounder?

Women of all shapes and sizes can look great in skinny jeans. There are plenty of easy ways to disguise problems areas – try a dark wash with fading down thighs to slim and elongate the legs, and high-rise jeans to dodge the dreaded muffin top. For those who want that extra support, Salsa Jeans offer an amazing range of solution jeans which use innovative technology to tuck in your tummy and lift up your bum.

When it comes to caring for your jeans, what are your top tips?

Washing your denim inside out will help to protect the colour and stop them from fading. Always wash them on a cool cycle; if you wash your jeans on a warm or hot cycle your jeans will lose colour and might shrink. Wear your jeans for as long as possible without washing and never tumble dry them.

Any hot new brands coming through on the denim scene?

The Premium denim market is still dominated by the LA brands, but with such a great range of brands to choose from you can’t complain. Last season we launched one of my personal favourites, LA based brand AG Jeans. I am yet to find a jean that’s as soft and as luxurious feeling, whilst offering a really classic easy look. I’d recommend the Legging Skinny in Eclipse for a sophisticated every day option.

What are the denim trends to look out for in AW14?

Ripped jeans have been making a big comeback for a few seasons now and for AW14 this continues. As well as clean rips across the knees, update your look this season by choosing a denim which is totally destroyed, or ripped and repaired with patchwork.

Coated continues to be a big trend into AW14. As a more affordable option to leather this trend is super stylish but without being over the top. Coated jeans are really easy to dress up or down – try tucked into boots for an everyday casual look, or with killer heels for a sexy evening look. You can’t go wrong with a classic black coated pair and I guarantee you’d get as much wear from them as a pair of denim jeans. I’d recommend 7 For All Mankind ‘The Skinny’ in black coated as a wardrobe staple, or in Port for a more seasonal winter look. Tip when buying coated: Make sure you pick a pair which fits you perfectly well as any bagginess is going to look really unflattering.

And remember denim doesn’t just mean jeans so build up your denim wardrobe with key pieces like denim jackets, shirts and shorts, or dungarees for a more directional look.

When it comes to jeans, how can you shop for your shape?

Smaller frames can get away with most denim styles but interest can be used to add volume such as zip details on the bum or hips. Hudson’s range of flap pocket jeans are a great way to add the appearance of a rounded rear.

Bootcut jeans are a great way to flatter someone who has larger thighs or hips as the kick at the bottom will help to balance your proportions and create a gorgeous womanly silhouette.

Straight leg jeans when worn with heels can really help to lengthen your legs so are perfect for little ladies like me, or lengthy ladies who just want to show off.

Any advice for those buying their jeans online?

Most denim brands vary in their sizing, however True-fit is a great online tool to help you buy the right size. Look for the red T on the product page and click to create your profile. It takes less than 60 seconds and gives you a size recommendation, as well as a personal fit rating.

I’d recommend seeing images on a model as well as cut-out shot so you can see the true shape and fit, and always use the zoom button to take a closer look at treatments or details.

Who is your ultimate denim style icon?

The original blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe lead the way for women’s denim in the early 60s. Her feminine take on the boyfriend jean made denim womanly and sexy where prior to this it had been a predominantly male look. My favourite looks of hers are from The Misfits film where she looks effortlessly stunning from start to finish.
