BLACK CHERRY LIPS
Berry shades to wear now
Dark cherry lipstick may sound intimidating but the trick to nailing this seductive trend for Autumn/Winter 2016 is to play with the intensity until it’s right for you. Opt for a sheer wash of gloss that leaves lips deliciously wine-stained or go for an intense swipe of dark plum lipstick as seen on the catwalks of Mary Katrantzou, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Read on for a masterclass on how to wear dark lipstick.
Sheer is the most subtle way to experiment this dramatic trend. A soft wash of dark cherry gloss lets your natural lip tone peek through. If you want to up the depth of the colour, use a lip pencil on your lips first.
"The more DRAMATIC the shade, the more NEUTRAL the rest of your makeup should be"
Dive into the trend head first by wearing a satin-matte lipstick with a hint of red or pink; purplish-black can look too ‘Goth’. Think plums, cherries, and berries — just a little on the molasses side.
"For a more SUBTLE look, apply the colour in the middle of the lips and BLEND outwards so it fades a little"
MATTE OR GLOSS?
Matte lipsticks look really dramatic and have great staying power but make sure your lips are well prepped. This is no time for flakiness. Give them a scrub and a swipe of Vaseline or lip cream prior to colour application.
"Go for a matte shade if you want a super on-trend 90s vibe. Go for a glossy finish to make it look a bit seventies"
DOUBLE UP ON YOUR CHEEKS
A dose of soft red or deep pink blush will keep you from looking like you’re starring in Kabuki theatre. Liven up your cheeks with a blush that is reddish or pink, as peaches and corals will clash with your lips.
"Balance out dramatic lips with a wash of pretty pinkish colour on your cheeks"
