Bored of black? Tired of grey? Take advantage of the menswear trend for florals and brights, as seen on catwalks everywhere from Etro, Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo, and inject some new life into your wardrobe. Shake off the boring and predictable with our guide to wearing colour and prints – without overdoing it.
SIMPLY DOES IT
Even if you’re a die-hard devotee of solid colours, you probably already own a piece of clothing that can add colour or print to your clothes. You can pair a classic herringbone blazer with a bright pocket square, for example, or, if you’re more streetwise, a navy bomber jacket with a bold lining.
A small token of print or bright colour can be very effective so if you err on the side of colour caution, a little can go a long way.
DISCOVER YOUR WILDER SIDE
When it comes to making a statement, the rule of thumb is to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
Take tropical prints; these are hugely popular this season - and the easiest way to incorporate them into an outfit is by making a relaxed-fit shirt the focal point of your look. Layer it with a plain jacket and denim or khaki trousers to look cool rather than too quirky. It might be the season of 1970s and 1980s revival but it’s still 2016.
YOU'RE UP FOR ANYTHING
Go hard (with style) or stay home. A matchy-matchy outfit isn’t the name of this game. Coordination is for wimps.
Layer up silks, patchworks and leathers, and blend formal with casual: mix it up joggers or tailored trousers for a formal twist. If in doubt, stick to three colours and dial up the contrast with different materials and textures.
