5 bag trends we love this summer

If there's one sartorial summer investment that will truly last you all year long; it's the humble handbag. With the best cost per wear and the ability to transform any outfit, it's perhaps the most sensible new-season buy a girl can make.

So where to start? This summer, bags are coming in many shapes, sizes and colours, with everything from ice cream pastels to luxe quilted styles and the latest nod to logo mania from the likes of Mario Valentino and Michael Kors. Here are five of our favourite bag trends for summer and beyond.

Living it large

Micro handbag trends are great and all, but if you're the kind of person who carries their life in their bag from dawn to dusk, you need a sidekick that doesn't mess around. You’re in luck - the roomy tote bag trend is on the upswing for summer, with the likes of Bottega Veneta, Loewe and Fendi all supersizing their bags.

Not only are they back, but this time they’re supersized enough to accommodate the woman that wants to take everything with her – and we mean everything.

If the parachute-sized bags of the runway are a little OTT for your morning commute, a sizeable tote will do the trick, like these ones from Mario Valentino and Tommy Hilfiger.

Summer tan

During the summer months, a classic black bag can be too harsh against your pastels and summer whites, but it’s quietly cool caramel-coloured counterpart is here to help.

Tan handbags always look sophisticated, and the simpler, plainer styles will not only look classy, but they'll also be a timeless addition to your wardrobe, too—meaning you get more bang for whatever buck you've put down. Invest in timeless styles from See by Chloe and Lauren By Ralph Lauren.

From slouchy sling-like iterations at Zimmerman to fortune cookie creations at Altuzarra and barrel bags at Rejina Pyo, it’s clear that for SS20, designers were of the same opinion – tan bags will be big news this year.

All we need now is an actual summer tan to match.

No quaint quilt

A bag we can rest our head on even if we can’t show it off to its full potential right now seems like a good idea to us.

While It seems like every fashion girl has recently been snapped toting around a quilted bag (just look to Rosie Huntington-Whitely's Instagram for evidence), we saw them descend onto the catwalks first - Tibi debuted classic-looking chain strap, stitched leather iterations while the quilted bags at Bottega Veneta were extra plush.

Black and cream are, of course, a fail-safe option to add to your accessories line-up, while statement shades such as rich reds and fresh pinks will invigorate your everyday outfits. Make Ted Baker, Day Et and Mario Valentino your first port of call.

Carry the rainbow

No summer would be complete without a pop of bright colour. Bold and beautiful hues like flame scarlet, orange peel and classic blue (Pantone’s colour of the year) may be having their moment in the ready-to-wear stakes, but accessories are following suit.

The likes of sun-bleached lemon totes at Bottega Veneta, quilted lilac cross-body versions at Max Mara and biscay green Chanel bags on the spring runways are enough to inspire even the most colour-phobic souls to dip a toe into this seasons rainbow pool.

Start with a minimal base of neutrals – a crisp white shirt or racer style tank top - and your colourful arm candy will make even more of a statement. Whether you prefer pastels, earthy tones or punchier shades – just put the black back

Names to know

A '90s-style icon fit to rival Jennifer Aniston, the logo-layden bag is making a triumphant return to our spring wardrobes. The desire for original “It” bag styles has gained such momentum that designers are dreaming-up flashback designs with vintage-feel logos that are fast becoming a must-have luxury accessory for fashion followers everywhere.

Choosing
a bag in a neutral colour will make this trend work for everyday wear while still providing a fun, vintage edge - just pledge allegiance to your favourite brand and wear it heavily stamped for all to see.
