What To Wear To Royal Ascot

Written by: Dawn Rajah

Published: 15/04/25

RSVP'd to Royal Ascot but still unsure of what to wear? With specific guidelines and style rules to follow, finding the perfect Royal Ascot outfit can feel like a sartorial puzzle. Whether you're gracing the prestigious Royal Enclosure or making an entrance at the Queen Anne Village, get to know your area and get ready with our do’s and don’ts. From full-length trouser suits to sophisticated jumpsuits and timeless cocktail dresses, here's your Royal Ascot dress code guide.

The Royal Enclosure

Once reserved exclusively for royalty, this prestigious area still operates on an invite-only basis, so your outfit must rise to the occasion. Hats are a must here, as fascinators do not meet the guidelines. If you’re opting for a headpiece, ensure it has a solid base of at least 4 inches (10cm) in diameter; anything smaller is considered to be a fascinator.

Women

Modest hemlines reign supreme, with knee-length or long dresses, tailored jumpsuits and full-length trousers being essential to Ascot’s Royal Enclosure dress code. To keep things polished, dresses and tops must have straps that are at least one inch wide—off-the-shoulder or spaghetti straps won’t make the cut.

Should the British weather turn, jackets and pashminas are permitted.

Men

A black or grey morning suit is compulsory for the Ascot men’s dress code, complete with a waistcoat, tie (no cravats), and a black or grey top hat, which must be worn at all times except when indoors, in a private box, or a seated dining area. The ensemble is traditionally paired with black dress shoes—highly polished, of course. Add a pocket square for a refined touch, and consider a luxury wristwatch to complete the look.

Windsor Enclosure

With prime front-row views of the Royal Procession and an alfresco atmosphere, the Windsor Enclosure is the most relaxed of them all. There’s no official dress code, but dressing with race-day elegance in mind is highly encouraged. Hats and fascinators are optional, but a chic clip-in fascinator offers a fuss-free way to elevate your ensemble.

Women

Go for breezy Bardot dresses, pretty playsuits, or a flattering midi dress. A floaty floral number paired with heeled mules and a woven clutch is a winning combination. Keep accessories light and playful— gold bangles, a delicate pendant necklace, and oversized sunglasses will complete your effortless summer look.

Men

Smart daywear is the go-to here—think tailored blazers, crisp chinos, and collared shirts. A linen suit in a light, summery hue is a sophisticated yet comfortable choice. While a tie is not mandatory, a pocket square or a subtly patterned tie can add an extra touch of polish. Loafers or brogues work well as footwear options, while a sleek pair of sunglasses finishes off the outfit effortlessly.

Village Enclosure

An outdoor social haven filled with stylish pop-up bars and alfresco dining, the Village Enclosure calls for polished race-day attire with a touch of modern flair. While the atmosphere is lively, the dress code is formal: fascinators must be worn at all times, and jumpsuits and trouser suits are permitted.

Women

Royal Ascot dresses should be knee-length or longer, and sheer straps or sleeves are a no-go. Midriffs must remain covered, ensuring a refined look. Think contemporary separates—perhaps a chic culotte jumpsuit paired with block heels or a structured midi dress with a sculptural headpiece. A mini bucket bag is a stylish yet practical choice, leaving your hands free for a celebratory glass of champagne.

Men

A suit is required, but you have more flexibility with colours and styles. A navy or checked suit makes a fashionable statement, while a pastel linen blazer paired with tailored trousers offers a contemporary spin. Formal neckwear, such as ties and bow ties, is mandatory, so choose something that reflects your personality—whether it’s a classic silk tie or something with a playful pattern. If you want to go the extra mile, a sleek lapel pin or cufflinks add a distinguished touch to your Royal Ascot fashion.

Queen Anne Enclosure

At the heart of Royal Ascot’s electric atmosphere, the Queen Anne Enclosure is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of bubbly while soaking up the excitement. A hat, headpiece, or fascinator is a must-have, making for a fabulous finishing touch.

Women

Fashion-forward yet sophisticated, your ensemble should adhere to the expected Ascot ladies' dress code. Dresses of any length are permitted, but strapless and sheer styles are not. Jumpsuits and culottes are allowed, offering a modern alternative to classic race-day attire. Elevate your ensemble with statement heels, a sleek clutch, and a refined watch—perhaps a gold bracelet timepiece for a timeless touch.

Men

A full-length suit with a shirt and tie is required for gentlemen, but morning suits are not necessary. A single- or double-breasted blazer in a classic shade—think navy, grey, or charcoal—paired with well-fitted trousers is a safe and stylish choice. Ties and bow ties must be worn at all times, and polo shirts or casual attire are not permitted. If the weather looks unpredictable, a tailored trench coat or lightweight overcoat is a practical yet stylish option.
