Fresh flowers do not need to finish with summer. Clematis 'Winter Beauty' produces creamy-white blooms in winter, giving your sheltered space something extra to enjoy during the colder months.
The flowers hang down like small bells, with a waxy surface and gently flared edges. They develop from pale green buds and have a delicate fragrance. Planting where they can be seen and enjoyed close up makes the most of these details.
These are evergreen climbing plants, which means they keep their leaves through the year and need a structure to climb. The glossy, dark green foliage provides a lasting leafy display. Use an obelisk, climbing frame or wires to support the stems, allowing room for a mature height of up to 4m.
They can grow in borders or large containers. The key is a sunny position protected from harsh weather, with soil that lets excess water drain away. Milder UK gardens suit it best outdoors. In colder areas, winter protection is needed, or plant in a container that can be moved into a greenhouse or conservatory.
There is little routine pruning to do. If the plants need tidying, do this after its flowers have finished.
