Face masks 101

Whatever your skincare concern, there are a multitude of face masks out there to help, whether your skin needs buffing, soothing or nurturing. Used as part of your nighttime routine or for a spot of self-care pampering, they can be an effective way to help relax and calm your mind. Not sure which one is right for you? Take a look at our easy-to-follow guide to face masks.

Exfoliating masks
Designed to remove dead skin cells and unblock your pores, exfoliating masks will leave your skin looking brighter and clearer. They often come in clay form and many include powerhouse ingredients like salicylic and glycolic acid. For a quick fix that also works to improve your skin over time, try Glamglow's YouthMud. It was first created for Hollywood stars to use before photoshoots and red carpet events and is now a firm favourite with all beauty aficionados for its smoothing effect. Kiehls Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque is a deep-cleansing clay mask that helps to absorb excess oil and eliminate impurities and toxins from the skin. Enriched with purifying Amazonian White Clay, soothing Oatmeal and calming Aloe Vera it's perfect for a gentle exfoliation.

Soothing & hydrating masks
If you want to combat dryness or irritation, a hydrating or smoothing mask is the secret to creating fresh and radiant skin. Look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and CBD or sativa seed oil. Irene Forte's Pistachio Face Mask is the dream. Infused with pistachio, pumpkin seed and avocado oils it leaves skin feeling soft and smooth.

Sheet masks
Originally a K-beauty export, sheet masks have long since moved to the mainstream. They're easy to apply wherever you are, which makes them ideal for travelling or anytime you don't want the hassle of washing one off. La Mer's contains a full 30ml of their bestselling Treatment Lotion for a surge of hydration, while Charlotte Tilbury's clever Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask is the ultimate fuss-free experience - perfect for those long-haul flights.

Overnight masks
Your skin works hardest to repair itself while you sleep, so make the most of its natural recovery cycle by applying an overnight mask. A restorative mask like the Sisley Velvet Sleeping Mask will intensely nourish dry skin and help it to regain its strength, while the Filorga NCEF-Night Mask leaves skin looking radiant and rested every morning even when you don't get your eight hours.
